When I walk in a room, as a student, I really look forward to a teacher like you that can make the classroom bigger than the entire universe for us.
And who can make us believe in ourselves.

When i go into a room, well I guess I am not always on fire.
I’m on fire for a reason. 🔥 To light up each student’s passion for learning. This is my goal. 📚

Oh, I miss those days – being in a classroom, engaging with students. I used to pass a little slip of bright paper to each student. I’d tell them 3 things they needed to know about me to help them be successful in my class: I have trouble hearing when there is background noise; I have a short memory (so they might need to remind me or repeat things); and I can’t read their minds (talk to me if you have any questions or concerns.) Then I’d ask the same of them: write down 3 things I need to know about you to help you be successful in my class. Sometimes the responses were funny (indicating character) and sometimes they were heartbreakingly revealing (such as “if I act up, don’t take it personally; I can’t help myself”.)
Brilliant VJ! I can see the twinkle in your eye as you passed out the papers. And the hear the laughter in the air as you read them at night. Thank you for sharing another one of your creative techniques for my teacher’s toolkit. As you continue to be a teacher (via writing), to your family, your readers, and especially me! xo

Thanks Brad! My PhD research was on teacher enthusiasm and student learning, motivation, and memory. And after all these years of teaching psychology, I have finally found the perfect mix of content and delivery – smiles, laughter, and a whole lot of high fives! Warmth motivates! 📕🔥

Haha! My first thought when I walk into my classroom was ‘You don’t want to know!’
Actually, I have been teaching for about 10 years. I still get ‘nervous’ before teaching even though I know my students are only 8 or 9 years old and they are probably just as nervous if not more nervous than me.
That is until their personalities kick in…. 🙂
Me too Sarah! Nervousness = Excitement. And I would never trade those first day jitters for anything. It shows that we’re still in the game! BTW lucky 8 & 9 year olds to have you for their teacher. You rock! 💥
